Lenswood Ranges Cricket Club — Lenswood Memorial Park, Swamp Road, LenswoodCricket 09

Cricket has been a popular sport in the Lenswood/Forest Range district since the early 1900’s.  The Lenswood Ranges Cricket Club was formed in 1974 when the Lenswood and Forest Range Clubs amalgamated.  The club enjoyed considerable success over the following 25 years winning numerous ‘A’ grade premierships and producing a number of outstanding players who have gone on to play at higher levels.

Today the club continues to compete in the Torrens Valley Cricket Association and fielded ‘A’ and ‘B’ grade teams last summer.  The ‘A’ grade team narrowly missed qualifying for the finals and hopes to go one better this year.  The ‘B’ grade has been going through a rebuilding phase and has some exciting young prospects.  Times have changed and people’s interests broadened.  Participation in local sport has declined in recent years but our club continues to hold its own.  The cricket club provides an excellent opportunity for social interaction within the local community.  Many long lasting friendships have been forged through involvement in sports (particularly cricket)!

Last season we installed a training pitch and net at the Lenswood oval, a move which has been highly beneficial to the club.

One of our aims for the upcoming season is to promote and encourage involvement in junior cricket.  We plan to work more closely with the Lenswood Primary school as a means of developing junior cricketers and providing a suitable competition for them.

New players (of any age or ability), or simply persons interested in the game (perhaps as scorers, coaches or umpires)are always welcome.

The club is based at the Lenswood (Memorial Park) oval.  Training is held on Thursday evening from 5:00 pm (6.00 pm summer time) followed by a ‘team meeting’.  Matches are played on Saturdays with the cricket season running from early October to mid March each summer.

Lenswood Table Tennis Club — Lenswood Memorial Park, Swamp Road, Lenswood

Many Lenswood/Forest Range residents may be unaware that there is a Lenswood Table Tennis Club.  As a minor sport, with a low profile table tennis tends to continue unnoticed by most in the district.  The Lenswood Table Tennis Club has existed for almost 50 years and currently competes in the Torrens Valley Table Tennis Association. In the old days teams consisted of 12 players and matches often went late into the night.

Table Tennis was particularly strong in the 1980’s and 90’s when Jeff Fryer (an enthusiastic supporter and player of the game) was a teacher at theLenswoodPrimary School.  The school was a winner of the State Primary Schools championship on several occasions.  In fact, a number of our present day players came through the ‘Jeff Fryer school system’!  The Norton, Schultz, Green and Brock family names are synonymous with Lenswood Table tennis. The Nortons and Greens, in particular, continue to be actively involved in the club.

This year we have two teams, each consisting of six players.  Matches are played on Wednesday evenings with our home venue being the Lenswood Memorial Park Hall.  The Table Tennis season runs from late April to August, through the winter months. Although matches are competitive, they are played in good spirit and make for an enjoyable evening.  The supper at the end of the evening’s matches is always a highlight.

As with most sports, the popularity of Table Tennis has varied over the years. It is encouraging to see a number of local youngsters have discovered the game and enjoy playing.  The future looks promising at this stage!  New players (competitive or social) are always welcome.
